The Hierophant, as all Tarot cards are, is highly symbolic & metaphorical in its translation. The Hierophant is deeply tied to authority in culture, society, the Self, education etc. The Hierophant‘s energy encourages us to either turn towards a guide / authority within our environment or internal landscape, or to find the ruling figure in a situation. To see, sense, and know the ruling, most informed (and then wise through embodiment) decision, especially when it comes to change. The Hierophant supports our changing self, inviting us to meet these shifts with authority, assertiveness, embodied wisdom, and channelled (received) assertiveness. I also believe the Hierophant holds within it some of the keys to our sovereignty! Our own INNER authority. He / She embodies truth through education, spiritual wisdom, a readiness to teach and share, and the power of asserting ones own authority into a space!
Reversed:
The Hierophant can represent a rejection of authority, our own or others’. Stagnation, i.e. an unwillingness to be in the flow of life or a resistance to change. Downfall of an idea, a teacher (or teaching). Making uninformed / rash decisions.

There is only one authority, that is your truth, which only YOU can hold high.
Reversed:
It’s important to see the reversed Hierophant as a teacher as well, to include its message of the uninformed in your consciousness. What is or can seem to be upside down is infact exactly as it needs to be. Change comes when and how we need it most, the Hierophant‘s wisdom calls to us all through the midpoint of its activity, within us. Learn to sit with the discomfort of NOT knowing, let it calm you, because the ‘right’ way, the authoritative way is aligned in heart, mind, body, and spirit, not just powerful action. But in BEING.
